Google cites itself in nearly 43% of AI Overviews.

So if you assumed AI answers were a level playing field, the house is already holding a big stack of chips.

That is exactly why AI search share of voice matters. It shows how much of the AI conversation your brand owns compared with the competitors you actually fight for customers.

In this guide, you will know how to calculate it, track it across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google, and turn the numbers into real SEO fixes.

What Is AI Search Share of Voice?

AI search share of voice is your share of brand mentions inside AI-generated answers, measured against a set of competitors you choose. Traditional SEO visibility tracks where your pages rank, and media share of voice tracks how much of the press or ad conversation you own. This metric lives somewhere else entirely: inside the answer itself.

And that answer behaves very differently from a results page. One ChatGPT response might name five tools, recommend only two of them, and cite a review site that links to none of them. So a mention, a recommendation, and a citation are three separate events, and lumping them together hides what is really happening.

Platforms also disagree with each other. Perplexity puts its sources front and center, Gemini leans on its own retrieval and ranking logic, and Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on the same core SEO foundations as regular search. That is why AI search visibility on one platform tells you very little about the next one, and why tracking several platforms side by side is the only honest picture.

AI SOV vs. Mention Rate vs. Citation Rate

These four numbers sound alike, but each one divides by something different. Here is the quick version:

MetricWhat it measures
Mention ratePercentage of tested responses that mention your brand
Mention share (AI SOV)Your brand mentions as a share of mentions across a defined competitor set
Citation ratePercentage of tested responses that cite your website
Recommendation ratePercentage of responses that recommend your brand

Mixing them up is the most common reporting error we see in client audits. A 60% mention rate and a 30% share can describe the exact same data set, so always label which one you are reporting.

How to Calculate AI Search Share of Voice

The formula is simple. That is exactly why so many teams get it wrong, because the hard part is the denominator, not the math.

AI SOV = (Your brand mentions ÷ Mentions of all tracked brands) × 100

The denominator includes mentions of your brand plus every competitor in your tracked set. All of those mentions must come from the same prompts, the same platforms, and the same reporting period, or the percentage means nothing.

Then set one scoring rule before you start. In our testing, we count each brand once per response, even if the answer names it four times. Counting every repetition rewards wordy answers and makes your numbers jump around for no real reason.

Mention rate works differently. It divides the responses that mention your brand by all responses tested, so it ignores competitors completely. Both are useful AI search metrics, but they answer different questions: “How often do we show up?” versus “How much of the conversation do we own?”

But here is the thing most guides skip. Your AI search share of voice can climb even when you appear in fewer answers, simply because a competitor dropped out of the results. That is why you should read share and mention rate together before celebrating anything.

A Worked AI SOV Example

Picture a fictional project management tool called TaskNest. Its team tests 50 category prompts in ChatGPT during October 2026 and tracks three direct competitors.

TaskNest gets 30 mentions, and the three rivals get 70 combined. That makes 100 total brand mentions, so TaskNest holds a 30% AI search share of voice on ChatGPT for the month.

Now look at mention rate. TaskNest showed up in 30 of 50 responses, which is a 60% mention rate. Same data, two very different numbers, because several brands can appear in one response and each metric needs its own denominator.

So when someone asks for your AI SOV, ask right back: share of what, on which platform, in which month? That one question saves a lot of confused meetings.

Quick calculation rules:

  • Count each brand once per response
  • Keep the competitor set fixed for the period
  • Report each platform separately first
  • Label share vs. mention rate on every chart

How to Measure Your Brand Across AI Search Platforms

This is where AI visibility measurement stops being theory. Four steps, done consistently, turn AI search share of voice from a one-off curiosity into something you can actually manage, and they build on the same principles behind measuring brand visibility in AI search more broadly.

Step 1. Build a Prompt List Based on Customer Questions

Your prompt list is your measuring tape, so build it from real customer language. Pull questions from Search Console queries, sales call notes, support tickets, FAQ pages, and the comparisons prospects ask about before they buy.

Mix four prompt types: category discovery (“best project management tool for agencies”), problem-solving (“how to stop missing client deadlines”), use-case, and comparison prompts. Start with 20 to 50 prompts and keep that core set locked, because rewriting prompts every month quietly breaks your trend line. Our guide to AI search prompt monitoring shows how to build and freeze the library.

Step 2. Test Prompts Across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google

Run the exact same prompts on each platform, including your ChatGPT search checks, in the same testing window. Test Google AI Overviews and AI Mode separately from the Gemini app, since they are different surfaces that pull from different source pools.

For every run, log:

  • Date and platform
  • Exact prompt
  • Brands mentioned
  • Competitors named
  • Sources cited
  • Who got recommended

Then repeat your most important prompts two or three times. AI answers vary from run to run, so a single test is a snapshot, not a measurement.

Step 3. Compare Your Brand With Competitors

Your share of voice is only as meaningful as the competitor set behind it. Pick three to five direct competitors and keep them stable, then compare mention share, citation rate, and recommendation rate platform by platform.

This competitor visibility view usually reveals the most useful thing in the whole report: prompts where rivals appear and you do not. When we run this for B2B SaaS clients, those gaps tend to cluster around comparison and “alternatives” prompts, which are the high-intent questions buyers ask right before booking a demo.

Step 4. Track Trends Over Time

Run recurring tests on the same core prompts with the same scoring rules, monthly at minimum and weekly for priority prompts. Report each platform on its own before blending anything, because one strong platform can easily hide a weak one.

And keep a change log. If you add prompts, swap a competitor, or change how you score, note it next to the data so your AI search share of voice trend still means something three months from now.

Here is what a simple monthly AI search monitoring report for TaskNest could look like:

Which AI Visibility Metrics Should You Track?

A single percentage is a headline, not a report. To make your AI search share of voice useful, pair it with metrics that explain why the number moved:

  • Brand mention rate: how often you appear in tested answers
  • AI share of voice: your mentions vs. the tracked competitor set
  • Website citation rate: how often your own pages get cited
  • Recommendation rate: how often the platform actually suggests you
  • Brand accuracy and sentiment: whether answers describe you correctly
  • AI referral traffic: identifiable AI visits in your analytics

Mentions and AI citations show visibility. Referral traffic and conversions connect that visibility to business results, but neither mentions nor citations alone prove revenue impact.

One practical warning from our own reporting work. Some AI apps do not pass referrer data cleanly, so treat AI referral traffic in GA4 as a floor, not a full count, and look at branded search trends alongside it.

How to Turn AI Search Share of Voice Data Into SEO Actions

Data only matters when it changes what you do next. Here is how to read the most common patterns your AI search analytics will surface:

What the data showsRecommended next step
Competitors appear on relevant category prompts, but your brand does notIdentify gaps in useful content, topical coverage, and third-party visibility
Your brand is mentioned but your website is rarely citedReview whether relevant pages answer the question clearly and provide useful evidence
AI answers describe your brand incorrectlyCorrect inconsistent or outdated information on your site and other authoritative sources
Visibility is strong on one platform but weak on anotherInvestigate differences in cited sources and content coverage by platform
Mentions increase but referral traffic does notReview citation placement, referral attribution, and whether users have a reason to visit

Treat every row as a clue, not a verdict. A citation gap on Perplexity might come from thin content, but it could just as easily come from a competitor’s fresh review roundup that everyone cites.

Take TaskNest’s ChatGPT row: mentioned often, cited rarely. The smart first move is checking whether its comparison pages answer the question in the opening lines with real evidence, and validating that before you decide the visibility gap is a content problem or touch anything technical.

Conclusion

The real value of AI search share of voice is not the percentage itself. It is the trend, read alongside mention rate, citations, and recommendations, on the same prompts month after month.

If your number stays flat while competitors pull ahead on comparison prompts, that is your roadmap for the next quarter. And if your share rises only because a rival vanished, you will catch it before it lands in a board slide as a fake win. That kind of clarity is what real AI brand visibility work is built on.
